Towing licence, brakes and registration

Three rules decide which trailer you can legally tow. Check them before you choose a size.

Code B or Code EB licence?

A Code B licence covers trailers with a gross vehicle mass (GVM) of up to 750 kg. Any trailer with a GVM above 750 kg needs a Code EB licence.

When does a trailer need brakes?

Trailers with a GVM above 750 kg must be braked. An unbraked trailer, fully loaded, may not weigh more than half the tare of your towing vehicle.

How to register a new trailer

Within 21 days, take your ID, proof of address and the manufacturer's certificate to your licensing department and complete the RLV form.

Checked September 2026. Registration steps follow the South African Government guide to registering a motor vehicle. Always confirm the GVM on your trailer’s plate and your vehicle’s towing capacity.

Our new trailers cost from R17,820 for a single quad trailer to R74,140 for a 2.3 ton braked cattle trailer. The popular 3/4 ton luggage trailer (2.4 x 1.5 x 1.2 m) is R24,070, and braked 1.3 ton trailers start at R39,840. Custom builds are quoted on your specification.

A Code B licence lets you tow a trailer with a gross vehicle mass (GVM) of up to 750 kg. For a trailer with a GVM above 750 kg you need a Code EB licence. The GVM is shown on the trailer's plate and registration papers, so check it before you buy.

In South Africa a trailer with a GVM above 750 kg must have brakes. An unbraked trailer may not weigh more, fully loaded, than half the tare of the vehicle towing it. Models marked braked in our price list have brakes fitted.

Take your ID, proof of residential address and the trailer's manufacturer's certificate to your local licensing department, and complete the RLV form. Register and license the trailer within 21 days of buying it to avoid arrear fees and penalties.

Match the trailer to your heaviest regular load and your towing vehicle. A 3/4 ton trailer (2.4 m or 3.0 m long) suits moving house, garden refuse and holiday luggage. For building material, farm loads or equipment choose a braked 1.3 or 2.3 ton trailer, and pick a car, bike, quad or cattle trailer for those jobs.

Heavy duty trailers are built for frequent, heavier use. On the 3.0 m 3/4 ton model, for example, the heavy duty version runs on 14 inch wheels instead of 13 inch and costs R35,820, compared with R26,580 for the standard trailer.
